I’ve been on a mission. A mission to find a great rechargeable wand. Something that’s more discreet, doesn’t hinder you by the power source being a plug, yet still provides awesomely strong vibrations.
Sextoys.co.uk were kind enough to send me a rechargeable wand to review. Prior to this I’d never heard of the Aurora wand but from looks alone: I loved the design, the handle looked easy to hold and it fit my criteria of being rechargeable. So, let’s see if the Aurora wand was able to live up to the expectations I had.
Yes, I know, the packaging of an item isn’t the be all and end all, but I’m the type of person who really likes a well packaged toy, especially if the item has a higher price tag. I want it to not only work like it should have the price tag but I also want it to look like it should too, and that includes the packaging.
I wasn’t disappointed with the packaging on this wand, it’s pretty damn nice. It comes in a thick cardboard box, which has a magnetic clasp. Once opened the wand and charging cable are beautifully displayed – making my initial impression a positive one.
How it looks and in use:
The Aurora wand is made entirely from dark pink silicone, with a silver ABS plastic bit over the handle. Both the silicone and the plastic have a Matte finish. Due to the Matte finish on the silicone, it does make the wand drag more on the skin, so a lot of lubrication is needed.
At the base of the wand is the charging port. Although the charging port is open, the wand is still 100% water proof, which is great, especially when it comes to cleaning it.
It has an overall length of 10.3 inches, with the circumference of the head being 7 inches at its widest point. The neck of the wand has a length of 1 inch, making it quite flexible.
On the handle there are two buttons. One is purely a power button, this will switch the vibrator on and off. To switch it on simply press the power button in – a blue light will come on – you then have to switch on the \/\/\ button. This will start the vibrations and also scroll through them. The wand has a total of 7 vibrations: three of them continuous vibrations and the other four are patterned. To switch the vibrator off, simply press the power button; this will turn the vibrator off instantly. I like the fact that it’s easy to switch off, however, I dislike that there isn’t a – button, so if you accidentally go past the setting you want, you have to turn the power off and start again from the beginning.
Another good thing (for me) is that the buttons are on a raised platform, and are also slightly raised; this makes it so easy to change the settings or turn the vibrator off when it’s under the duvet, or if it’s dark. I’ve had way too many vibrators in the past where I’ve hit the wrong buttons due to not being able to see and/or feel the settings.
I actually quite like how the wand looks; I wish it wasn’t made of silicone. I think the matte finish on the silver handle would look better if it were shiny or if it wasn’t there at all. However, I really dislike the seam that right through the middle of the wand.
Prior to using the wand you will need to charge it. It comes with a USB charging cable and takes approximately 2 hours to charge which gives you an approximate play time of 2-3 hours depending on the setting. This is solely a rechargeable wand, so you’re unable to use it whilst it’s plugged in.
The Aurora wand is by far the lightest wand that I currently own, it has a weight of 9.8oz – For comparison my Doxy wand has a weight of (excluding the wire) 18.4oz and the Lelo Smart Wand has a weight of 14.3oz . Due to how light it is, added with the curve of the handle, it’s so easy to hold and doesn’t ache as much as the others during prolonged use.
The vibrations are buzzy and, although they’re quite strong, they’re not nearly as strong as any of my plugged in wands. The vibrations also travel down the handle, which after using it for a while it makes my hand tingle and become numb – this for me is a bit of a problem.
Care and Maintenance:
Due to the wand being made from silicone, it’s advised that you only use a good quality water based lubricant, as any other lubricant may damage the wand. If you’re wanting to try another lubricant, I’d advise that you do a patch test first, somewhere where it won’t come in contact with your skin.
Cleaning is simple: due to the toy being water proof you can just wash it in some warm soapy water, and/or spray with sex toy cleaner and wipe down. As the charging port is exposed, make sure it is dry fully before putting it back on charge.
This is a pretty decent wand. It’s made from body safe material. It’s quite powerful but not overly powerful – which I think would make a great wand for people who like the idea of wands, but don’t want the full power that a corded wand delivers.
The vibrations are buzzy, which isn’t great for me; because of this it takes a lot longer for me to orgasm . The buzzy vibrations also travel down the handle, which can make my hands fall asleep.
Due to the smaller head, my usual wand attachments don’t work on this, and I’ve not been able to find (as of yet) any other attachments that will fit on this.
As a wand it does its job. It’s reasonably powerful, the shape and weight make it so easy to manoeuvre, and it is pretty perfect for massage – as a massager, it actually feels pretty great. It’s not the deep and rumbling vibrations that I’m used to, but it’s not buzzy enough to make the rest of my body go numb. The shape and weight make it easier for me to massage myself for longer than I’m able to with larger wands. However, as I pointed out, the vibrations do travel down through the wand so I can’t use it as long as I’d like to.
The wand is so easy to use: the buttons are placed in an ideal location, there’s no struggling to find them, and it’s incredibly easy to turn off (perfect for shared houses). The wand is described (on the packaging) as silent, which IMO is a pretty ridiculous statement to make. It’s in no way silent. However, it is quiet. It’s a lot quieter than the other wands and, when used under a thick duvet, it can barely be heard.
All in all, I like the wand, it’s great, but it’s not the wand for people who need more power (I feel like Tim the tool man Taylor right now). I am one of those people who need more powerful vibrations to climax. I was able to orgasm from this but it took a lot longer than it usually does with other wands I own. If you’re wanting power, then this isn’t the wand for you – maybe the Doxy corded wand would be more suitable, or the Lelo Smart Wand (Large). But if you’ve always wanted a wand and haven’t bothered because they’re too powerful, then this wand could be perfect for you.
