I was recently sent the Fifty Shades of Grey (FSOG)- Massage me candle to test by Lovehoney. I have to admit I do love massage candles, so I was excited to test it.
The series itself seems to have the same standard packaging throughout, that consists of a black cardboard box, the icon from the book series (Christian Greys tie) and some information in white about the product. All in all I find the packaging to look quite classy and attractive.
The candle is presented in a black tin, which also doubles as the candle/massage oil holder, inside the tin there is also a small plastic spoon which can be used for spooning out the oil when you’re ready to give the massage or well receive one.
The instructions on the box advise me to light the candle 15 – 30 minutes prior to giving the massage so enough oil is produced, after this amount of time had elapsed I noticed that there was a puddle of oil available but not a huge amount so I left it for around an hour and 15minutes. So if you want to surprise your OH with a full body massage I would advise leaving this candle lit for well over an hour to produce enough oil.
I have to admit, I wasn’t overly keen on the smell of the candle, I didn’t recognise the smell and it didn’t tell me what it was on the box anywhere, or the tin! The only information I could see in relation to the candle is that it is made from Coconut oil and Jojoba, so that could be what the smell is – It doesn’t smell like coconut, and I have no idea what Jojoba is. I did notice it smelt a lot better after it was lit, and the smell does fill the room. I also noticed that when re lighting the candle, the smell is awful, like a burning smell for the first few minutes, also make sure to light it in a safe place, when I re lit my candle the flame went up several inches and produced black smoke for a few seconds!
Once the oil was ready it felt amazing being massaged in to my skin, I love the heat of the massage candle oil when the wick has just been blown out; it’s just warm, not enough to scold yourself with just a nice change of temperature. And that really is the only thing I liked about the massage candle, which is sad really.
I found that you need to use a lot of oil, as it just seems to soak in to your skin quite quickly (So keep that in mind for how much oil you want to produce when initially lighting the candle and how long it should be lit for) and after the massage was finished I was hoping my skin would feel lovely. That however wasn’t the case, it felt extremely greasy – so much so that I had to go and instantly take a shower as I couldn’t stand how my skin felt.
So since for me the smell was just OK and it left me feeling greasy I wouldn’t recommend the FSOG massage candle!
I think I’ll be sticking with the Earthly body range for my massage candles!
